Not all tights are created equal! If your son is interested in dance you should allow him to have the right equipment to perform in. This includes proper tights to wear to practice class and performances. Most school can offer advice as to what kinds of tights to purchase him but be aware mens and women’s tights are different.

If you are shopping at a dance apparel store and they suggest that dance tights for boys and girls are the same, they do not fully understand the needs of a male dancer. Girl’s tights are a lot thinner then boys. They are practically see through. Dance tights for boys are thicker and more like leggings then pantyhose. There is not a lot to choose from when buying boys ballet tights and colors are usually limited to black, white and sometimes beige. There are a few different styles available which can be footed, footless or convertible. Footed ballet tights extend past the ankle and over the foot, whereas footless end at the ankle much like leggings and convertible tights can be either footed or footless. They have a hole on the bottom so they can be rolled up over the foot to the ankle. These can be great if you are participating in different styles of dance and require quick changes to footed or footless.

Boys dance tights can be purchased at most dance apparel stores or online. Getting the right size is fairly easy as most packaging will have size conversions on the back. If purchasing online, check the website for sizing charts. Boys tights usually cost 15 — 30 dollars depending on the brand and style you choose. Although the tights will last a fairly long time ( a couple of months), it is best to start out with at least 2 pairs so you can wash and dry them and still have a pair to wear.
